Ship Trails
![]()
The peculiar clouds seen in this satellite image are actually ship trails, also called ship plumes. Similar to airplane contrails, they are formed by the condensation of exhaust from passing ships. Scientists are still studying exactly why the exhaust causes increased condensation and how pollutants from diesel fuel contribute to the process.
