What is more likely to be correct, the information published by a newspaper almost one hundred years ago and thousands of kilometres away from the source of the news, or something very recent from the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences?
"Glaciers have retreated sharply in recent years, as a report by the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere Observation of the Academy of Natural Sciences shows.
This year, the glacier volume in Switzerland has decreased by four percent, which is the second largest decline since measurements began.
According to the report, the massive ice loss is due to the lack of snow in the winter and high temperatures in the summer.
The volume of glaciers in Switzerland is decreasing every year - and faster than expected: last year the glaciers in Switzerland lost 6 percent of their volume, this year it is 4 percent. This is the second largest decline since measurements began.
In total, ten percent of the ice volume of the Swiss glaciers disappeared in just two years, as reported by the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere Observation of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences."
From 1950 to 2020 the volume of ice in the Swiss glaciers shrank by 50%
In nur zwei Jahren ging so viel Eis verloren wie letztmals zwischen 1960 und 1990. Das zeigt ein neuer Bericht.
